    Why IM Squash Should Exist

Why IM Squash Should Exist Luke Carroll & Kevin Jiang Intramural programs at Belmont Hill are under attack. Across the board, the school has tightened policy regarding any IM Sports. Recently, IM Basketball and Tennis were canceled. Squash cannot be next. If we don’t take a stand now, our school will lack accommodation for any type of student (extracurricular or outside-sport oriented) other than those who play a strong sport in each and every season. IM Squash isn’t about preserving a more easy-going sport for some Middle School students; it’s about our freedom to choose as a student body and our identity as an accepting school. Both of those should be non-negotiable, yet we still need to work to defend them to this day. Intramural Squash preserves our right to choose as students, improves our school’s identity and reputation, and allows for a flourishing extracurricular community. As a student body, we have earned the right to choose between levels of sports according to our own needs and wants. If the school were to continue its aggressive policy against intramural sports, our right to choose would be squandered. IM Squash is the best example of students using this right. From former hockey players to skiers, IM Squash is the only place to find exercise without overwhelming and often unnecessary competition. The fact that intramural programs like Squash don’t exist in other seasons for Lower Schoolers should be considered tragic. Not only does it force students to invest more time and energy into sports that they aren’t passionate about, but they have to forgo extracurricular activities that would actually be to their benefit. Intramural sports aren’t a luxury, but a right. From the perspective of a student, any elimination of these programs should be intolerable. As an entire community, retaining our IM...

    Why IM Squash Shouldn’t Exist

Why IM Squash Shouldn’t Exist Luke Carroll and Lawrence Tang Middle School Intramural Squash shouldn’t exist. Intramural sports as a whole, in fact, are useless; they offer no structure, exercise, or progress for the students in that sport and are otherwise wasteful. Recently, IM Basketball was canceled. IM Squash should be the next to go. Belmont Hill has a reputation for excellence in athletics, and that reputation shouldn’t be damaged by the existence of gratuitous “hobby sports”. The best decision as a community would be to expand the Third Squash program (or other winter sports) and completely eliminate IM Squash. There are two outstanding issues with this and any other intramural sport: it tarnishes Belmont Hill’s reputation and takes up time and much-needed resources. Firstly, though few other schools have mandatory sports like BH, almost none have intramural sports teams. The mandatory sports requirements don’t exist for the sake of forcing the students to play a sport; they exist so students can work together on a team and gain real athletic and leadership skills. IM Squash lacks in both of these benefits, failing to fulfill Belmont Hill’s core values. Not only does it tarnish the school’s sports reputation, but it sets back the students who decide to take it, regarding their athletic career. Belmont Hill is the most dominant school in the ISL, yet allows its reputation within and without the league to suffer because of its IM programs. These facts alone should have convinced the school to cancel any IM programs, yet IM Squash still exists. Other than its reputation, though, Belmont Hill should cancel the intramural program to alleviate some stress on faculty members and stop the waste of resources. IM Squash requires faculty members, takes valuable time, and needs to be supplied (with balls, etc.) by our...

    Ghost Story: A Murderer’s Fate

A Murderer’s Fate Thomas Romney I jolted out of bed, throwing the sheets into a heap on the floor. The room was freezing cold, but I was drenched in sweat. My heart was racing as I thought of the dream which I had seen moments earlier. It was a vision I saw every time I closed my eyes at night to sleep. Every night, I was transported to the same, dark alleyway; the full moon illuminated the scene of gore in front of me. My dear wife lay in a pool of blood, both of her eyes gouged out by the cruel blade in my hand. Every time I tried to run, but my legs were frozen in place, forcing me to confront the egregious act which I had committed. Suddenly, a forceful gust of wind tore through my drawn curtains, rattling the doors of the ancient dresser in the corner of the room. The moon cast a sickly, pale white light into my chamber, causing eerie shadows to fall where it’s light could not reach. The room, once occupied by my late wife, was more elaborate in decoration than my philistine tastes enjoyed. Fine tapestries lined the walls, and an intricate carpet covered the entire floor. I shut the window and lit an oil lamp on my nightstand to dispel the sinister silhouettes caused by the ghastly moon. As the room lit up, a terrible figure attracted my gaze, but before I could focus my attention on it, it had disappeared. Believing the specter to be merely a figment of my imagination, I moved to enter the washroom, opening the door opposite to the window, cautiously and slowly because of my irrational fear. Suddenly, I froze. The door was open merely a crack, but inside I saw a glimpse...

    Ghost Story: The House

The House Sebastian Costantini “Hey Matt,” my best friend Teddy called out. “Can we please leave?” “Fine, let’s go,” I called back. Half drunk, I slowly walked away from the house. I looked at the time on my phone: 2:53 AM. As I climbed into the car, Teddy said, “Are you going to jeopardize my safety by driving drunk?” “Relax, I only had like four.” “But-” “Trust me, I’m fine.” Teddy and I are not people you would think would be best friends. His forte is studying and martial arts. I prefer hockey and girls. His only foible is that he finds girls erotic, but he doesn’t know how talk to them. I started the car, put on waze, and began to drive. The party was in the middle of nowhere. There were no streetlights, and all I could see was woods. I looked over at Teddy. He was asleep. I looked down at my phone. Waze showed us arriving at 3:34 AM. Not realizing that I was slowly drifting off the road, I looked back just in time to see the tree. I didn’t have enough time to scream. The ear piercing crunch of metal and glass could be heard for miles. As the car compressed, the airbags sprang out, and I was slammed in the face. Slowly, I lifted up my head, feeling my face. I looked at my hand, mesmerized by the blood spilling from my nose. Oh no, Teddy!! “Teddy! Teddy!!” I screamed. I felt for a pulse, finding none. My eyes widened. Tears and blood stained my shirt as I desperately shook my best friend. “Wake up!” I exited the car and looked around frantically. Only woods and darkness. Shaking, I walked back to what was left of the car and grabbed my phone. Long...

    MLB 2018 Free Agency Predictions

MLB 2018 Free Agency Predictions Noah Farb All updates in the prediction sections are as of 1/2 Notable Free Agents who have already signed (as of 12/5). All numbers in parenthesis are the ESPN free agent rank of the player. Patrick Corbin, Diamondbacks→ Nationals (3) Josh Donaldson, Indians→ Braves (8) Nathan Eovaldi, Red Sox→  Red Sox (11) CC Sabathia, Yankees→  Yankees (27) Jesse Chavez, Cubs→  Rangers (28) Steve Pearce, Red Sox→  Red Sox, (49) The Huge Ones Manny Machado, Los Angeles Dodgers, SS/3B (1) The option for Manny Machado to play either shortstop or third base makes him open to a lot of teams in need of the position. The Braves and Phillies were thought to be some of the potential suitors for Machado but Josh Donaldson signed with Atlanta and the Phillies traded for Jean Segura which limits both their chances. Machado has seemed to lean towards the Yankees and that’s probably where he’ll end up even with his ‘Johnny Hustle’ comments. Prediction: New York Yankees, Second: Philadelphia Phillies, Other Possibilities: Chicago White Sox Bryce Harper, Washington Nationals, RF (2) Bryce Harper is not a top fielder like Manny Machado is and playing a corner outfield spot will limit the amount of teams that will try to sign him. He will still have a very big market though and could turn into a bidding war for a couple teams. The Phillies will try very hard to sign him but I don’t think the Nationals will let a division rival take him from them. The Nationals will have some spending limitations from the Patrick Corbin deal which could open up a spot for a team outside the NL East Prediction: Chicago Cubs, Second: Philadelphia Phillies, Other Possibilities: Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers The Big Ones Michael...

    Athlete of the Issue

Athlete of the Issue Michael Ahonen Oluwakoleade Osinubi may be one of the most superb athletes in the Belmont Hill middle school. He came in third for the General Dennis D Cavin Player of the Year, an award given to the top football players of their class for the Football University (FBU) teams, competing with some of the best in the nation. When asked about getting awarded the third place, Osinubi said he was, “Very humbled to place third in the nation, and grateful to have had the opportunity to compete for the award.” Not only was Osinubi an impact player for his FBU team, he also excelled for his Belmont Hill school team, rushing for four touchdowns in five games this season for his Third Football team. Osinubi was a game changer on both sides of the ball, playing running back and defensive end. He also is a standout player this winter for his basketball team, and has hopes to play varsity football and basketball next season.

    NFL Playoff Predictions

NFL Playoff Predictions Matthew Martines AFC Patriots vs Chargers My prediction: Patriots 27 Chargers 17 Tom Brady and the Patriots will be well rested because of the first round bye. The Patriots seemed to have finally figured it out late in the season and just in time for the playoffs. Home field advantage for the Patriots makes that a favorite in this game since the Chargers are used to playing in the warm weather of LA. The Patriots offense will find a way to score even without Josh Gordon. Chiefs vs Colts My prediction: Chiefs 41 Colts 21 The high powered Kansas city offense will not be stopped by the Colts defense, which is not very strong. Even though the Chiefs defense is not great, their offense can make up for that. A possible MVP candidate Patrick Mahomes has played incredible this season with 50 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions. With weapons like Tyreek Hill, the offense will carry them to the AFC Championship. NFC Rams vs Cowboys My prediction: Rams 35 Cowboys 20 The Rams have been a very strong team all season long and they will beat the Cowboys in this game by a close margin. Jared Goff has had a great season with 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. But the defense of the Rams will win them the game. Their defense will contain the running ability of Ezekiel Elliott with their strong defensive line. Eagles vs Saints My Prediction: Saints 45 Eagles 21 The Saints will blow out the Eagles with the help of Drew Brees. The Saints offense has proved unstoppable this season and Drew Brees is having an MVP season with 32 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions. The only way the Eagles could pull this out is by a miracle. Championship Games AFC Patriots vs...

The Case Against the Trade War

The Case Against the Trade War Luke Carroll In recent years, China’s economy has exploded. It has recorded some of the fastest growth rates in history, and its economy is second only to the United States. Not only that, but it is quickly becoming a dominant military power in Asia and across the world. The current administration has chosen to engage in a trade war with China. Between the two, there have been tariffs placed on over $360 billion worth of goods. Not only is this hurting both economies, but it is harming the voters that put President Trump in power. Our job, as the established world power, isn’t to tear them down while sacrificing ourselves. Instead, we should engage in competition without letting the core of our economy suffer. To give perspective, Trump’s tariffs on China have been hurting businesses in his own country, as much as they are hurting China. Farmers, for example, are being hurt worst. Chinese companies are canceling contracts and instead of buying produce from other countries, like Canada and Brazil, causing more permanent damage. To heal these wounds and bring back business to the United States could take years or even decades. The government had to pay $12 billion in relief funds to farmers, and still many individuals are struggling to stay afloat. This is only one example of many. From Apple to Walmart to bike manufacturers, American companies have seen loss. And, in all of this, the trade deficit with China has only risen. In fact, China reached a record-breaking trade surplus with the US, reaching almost 35 billion dollars. A trade war is not the way to approach China. Loss in the US should be unacceptable, yet it is growing daily. China has also implemented an aggressive economic foreign policy initiative, totaling...

Fortnite Season 7: An extensive report

Fortnite Season 7: An extensive report Daniel Xie On Thursday, December 6th, the whole world witnessed an event that brought Christmas spirit to Fortnite. With new vehicles, a new battle pass, and new locations, Season 7 was… cool. First off, Epic added some new locations to the Fortnite map, including Happy Hamlet, Frosty Flights, Polar Peak, a snow covered Snobby Shores and Shifty Shafts, and a completely iced over Greasy Grove, and Lazy Links has been replaced by the Block. Basically, half the map is now frozen. Stepping on the ice will have the same effect as a Chiller Trap, freezing your feet and letting you slide. This is good for fast moving, but is not the best for build battles, or just overall aiming/building. As for a ski resort, that has not yet been added, but ziplines have been placed throughout the map, along with airplane/quadcrasher hangers. The airplanes have a boost feature, similar to the quadcrasher, and have a mounted turret attached to the front. In addition to all the added features, Epic Games added a new game mode, Creative mode, where you can build whatever you want. Every season brings a new battle pass, and Season 7 was no exception. The free pass includes basic cosmetics, like the Royale Air Glider, or the Abominable Axe. It also includes emotes, such as the Mic Drop Emote. The battle pass, costing 950 V-Bucks (Fortnite’s in-game currency) contains much more items. If and when you decide to purchase the battle pass, you are instantly given the Lynx and Zenith skins. At Tier 5, you unlock a new feature added to Fortnite: Gun Skins. With these, you can decorate your guns/vehicles, making them colorful and unique. Tier 11 also has a gun skin, along with tiers 26, 43, 60, and 74....
