Why the Patriots are still one of the Best Teams in Football

Noah Farb, Kevin Weldon

As you probably know, one of the best teams in the National Football League the New England Patriots had a rough start. After winning Week One against the Houston Texans, they proceeded to lose two in a row against the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Detroit Lions before having a convincing win over the Miami Dolphins and Colts. After scoring 38 points in two straight games the Patriots proved that they are still one of the best teams in the NFL.

One of the reasons why I think that the Patriots will do well in 2018 season for the Patriots is because some of their best players have not played all of the games because of injury or suspension. These players include cornerback Eric Rowe, defensive end Trey Flowers, safety Patrick Chung, and wideouts Julian Edelman and also recent trade edition Josh Gordon. For the most parts of the first three games, the Patriots have missed key defensive starters Trey Flowers and Patrick Chung with concussions. After those two left the game versus Jacksonville, the defense fell apart and let up many long gains including a 61-yard touchdown to wide receiver Dede Westbrook that sealed the win for the Jaguars. For the games against the Lions, Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts, the Patriots were also missing starting cornerback Eric Rowe and let up lots of long passing gains that could have been prevented if Rowe wasn’t injured. On the offensive side, the Patriots have been without top wide receiver Julian Edelman, who made an impact in his first game back against the Colts on Thursday Night Football after serving a four-game suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs (PED) during rehab for his torn ACL. Josh Gordon also showed his presence scoring an important touchdown against the Colts. When Trey Flowers and Patrick Chung came back against Miami, the team that let over 25 points to two games in a row to average offenses held Miami to only one touchdown, after the game was clearly over.

Also, Bill Belichick Patriots teams have a history of not starting out the season as well they finish it as this data table shows:
